Look how we learn maths!!

Online games linked to our blog so we can learn the same things at home as we do at school.

We use mats to help us make sets, add 2 numbers together, or write number sentences.

We use foam shapes to work collaboratively making patterns, tessalations and learn about shape attributes.

We play twister using dice so that we can practise reading numbers, matching number patterns to written numerals and recognise patterns to 10.

We use whiteboard mats to practise writing numbers the correct way and reading numbers that we write.

We use the mimio, which is like a big touch screen, to play online games practising basic facts and number knowledge while having fun.

Can you think of fun ways to leanr maths at home?
We would love to hear about it.

Some ideas to try:
Make pairs with shoes and socks
Set the table counting the number of forks, knives etc.
Count the number of door handles in the house.
How many steps to get from the lounge to bed?

Our Inquiry Learning

Welcome back everyone and a special welcome to our new entrants who started school this term.
We are very excited about finding out about New Zealand and what it means to be a New Zealander. Our inquiry question is 'What makes New Zealand Unique?'. When the world cup begins we will be following some of the countries and comparing them to see what makes them different from our way of living.

Technology Whizz!!

Technology continues to be a very popular and effective way to teach in our classrooms. There are endless supplies of interactive stories, activities, games on the web. Our interactive whiteboards provide limitless supply of teaching possibilities. Children are so engaged in this style of learning they problem solve and share knowledge with each other on a regular basis in class, mostly without a teacher.

Learning from each other

One of our Pataitai Stations is the Vet Clinic. It is our caring and sharing place where we learn to care for others, ask questions and self manage by sharing, talking nicely to each other and taking turns. It is amazing to observe from a distance how they become so involved in their roles. It creates a great sense of community in our pod.

Eating our Numbers

There are so many different ways we can learn. On Friday we made numbers out of bread dough. It was hard work making the long rope of dough with our hands and then we had to make the numbers look the right way around. It is sort of like writing them too. The best part, of course, was eating our numbers

Celebrating our learning at assembly

We began our assembly singing a song to celebrate the letter c. We played our ukelele on the chord of c and sung 'c is for cookie' by the cookie monster. It is our favourite song at the moment. For our inquiry learning, investigating night and day, we created our own nocturnal animals. We had to find out how animals survive in the dark and look at the features they need. We made our own nocturnal animal and wrote some fantastic stories about them. It is very scary for us to get up infront of five other classrooms and all of the parents and family. We were brave and we did our best. We are very proud of ourselves and it felt really good afterwards.

Our Snowy School

It is winter and it is cold. Sometimes when you look out the window there is ice on the grass. Joshua found a leaf stuck in the ice and he smashed on the ice to break it. The ice was cold! "You cannot go in puddles because of the ice and you could slip" said Jack. You can slide on the ice. "It is fun" said Ella, but many other people said it can be dangerous because you can hurt yourself. Your toes feel numb and tingly when you go outside. It looks really pretty though.
